What exactly is a Whimsywood potion kit?
It's not a real potion — it's a sensory, social-emotional learning tool disguised as one. Every kit begins with a story that models a feeling or theme (like steadiness, kindness, or repair) and shows a healthy way of moving through it. Then your child gets to brew their own potion, measuring, stirring, and mixing real sensory ingredients. That hands-on stirring and focus is doing real work: it helps a child's nervous system settle into a calm, regulated state. That calm, focused moment is exactly when the ingredient cards come in, you read them together, and each one becomes a natural prompt for a real conversation about feelings, paired with an affirmation, a breathing exercise, or a bit of imaginative play. It's parent-child connection with just enough structure that it's easy to lead, wrapped in enough magic that your child doesn't realize they're learning a life skill, they just think they're making a potion.
Are the potions safe? Can my child eat or drink them?
Whimsywood potion kits are for imaginative play and sensory learning only, not for consumption, they are non-medicinal and not edible. That said, every ingredient we use is safe and non-toxic, and all of our glitter is biodegradable. Once your child's potion is finished, it's perfectly fine to pour it out onto your garden or houseplants. Recommended for ages 4+ with adult supervision.
Why does my child have to make the potion instead of just getting a toy?
The making is the point. The measuring, stirring, and sensory focus is what settles a child's nervous system, it's what puts them in a calm, receptive state right before the meaningful part: the conversation you have together over the ingredient cards. Skip the brewing, and you skip the part that makes the lesson land.
Do I need to be crafty or good at storytelling to do this with my child?
Not at all. Everything is scripted for you, the story, the ingredient cards, the affirmations and prompts are all written out, so you can simply read and follow along. You bring the presence, we bring the structure.
What age are these designed for?
Ages 4 and up, with adult supervision. Older kids enjoy them too, the conversations just go a little deeper.
What if my child has sensitivities to certain ingredients?
Every kit lists its sensory ingredients, so we'd recommend giving them a look before your child's first potion if you're ever unsure about a sensitivity. Reach out through our Contact page if you have a specific ingredient question before you buy.
What makes the Friendship Fusion Potion Kit different from the others?
It's the one potion kit built to match a specific story. It mirrors the same ingredients and brewing order that Ellie and Gracie use in Whimsywood: The Friendship Fusion, so your child can read the book and then recreate their potion step by step, right alongside the characters. Because it includes a larger cauldron and additional ingredients, it's priced a little higher than the other kits.
How is a potion kit different from the books or the Story Keeper Cards?
They're all part of the same world, but they each do something a little different. The potion kits are the hands-on ritual, story, sensory play, and a guided conversation in one sitting. The Whimsywood books are stories from the world you read together like any picture or chapter book. The Story Keeper Cards are an open-ended storytelling game, less structured, more improvisational, great for whenever imagination needs a spark.
Where does all this actually come from? Is it backed by anything?
Every story, every herb, every practice in Whimsywood comes out of my own life and years of study, not a database. I have a background in herbalism, spent years working alongside midwives in the home birth world, and have trained and taught as a yoga teacher. I'm also a homeschooling mom (and grandmother!) with a genuine, endless need to understand the natural world and everything it has to offer. I spend real hours researching, both for Whimsywood and for my own parenting, drawing from sources like The Whole-Brain Child, Dr. Becky Kennedy's Good Inside approach, attachment parenting research, and Waldorf philosophy, and I use all of it with my own children and grandchildren, not just on the page. At the center of it all is one belief I hold completely: children are magical, good, and worthy exactly as they are, and helping both kids and the grown-ups who love them see that clearly makes the whole world a little better.
Is the Whimsywood art AI-generated?
I use AI as a tool, not as the artist. Every character, their look, their personality, their whole world, started in my own imagination, built from that same well of research and lived experience. I create them, then I feed reference images and detailed direction into an AI image generator to help render poses, scenes, and backgrounds. The AI has no say in the ideas, the direction, or the substance, that's all me. It just helps bring what's already in my head onto the page, the way many illustrators today use a tablet instead of paint. If that's ever a dealbreaker for you, I'd rather you know upfront than be surprised later.
Can I meet Whimsywood in person?
Yes! We hold Tales and Tea, a free weekly storytime and herb exploration, every Wednesday at 11am, and the Apothecary Apprentice Academy, a more immersive monthly workshop, on the last Saturday of each month, both at The Artisan's Apothecary in Brigham City.
